ABOUT

Hi, I'm Abby.

…Nurse Practitioner, sexual health expert and creator of The Bare Facts. And you can ask me just about anything. If it has to do with sexual health and your body, ANYTHING GOES!

As a Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in the sexual health space, I've had countless conversations with adolescents and adult women about their bodies, sexual history, and contraceptive options. One of my greatest frustrations (and certainly theirs) is that our traditional insurance-based healthcare model doesn’t allow medical providers adequate time for such delicate conversations or quality sexual health education. By the time they find me, many patients have already sought medical advice and report feeling more confused, frustrated, or pressured to pursue options that don’t feel like the right fit.

As a parent myself, that's not what I want for our kids! Evidence consistently shows that high-quality sexuality education — especially when complemented with the involvement of trusted adults — delivers positive health outcomes with lifelong impacts. Young people are more likely to delay sexual activity — and when they do have sex, to practice safer sex — when they are better informed about their sexuality, sexual health, and their rights.

As a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, I’ve long witnessed the real-world consequences of inadequate sexual health education. As a mother and aunt to teenage boys, I see how frequently young men are excluded from conversations about sexual development. Health curricula in schools barely scratches the surface: there are significant gaps and inconsistencies in how sexual health education is delivered — if it’s delivered at all. And there's just no substitute for the advice of a medical professional when it comes to sexual and reproductive health.

I believe everyone deserves access to accurate, evidence-based sexual health resources, as well as freedom from coercion, discrimination, and violence. So The Bare Facts was born to empower teens and young adults of all genders and identities to make informed decisions about their sexual health through comprehensive education, open communication, and compassionate care.
