ABOUT
Hi, I'm Abby…
…Nurse Practitioner, Sexual health expert and creator of The Bare Facts. And you can ask me just about anything! If it has to do with sexual health and your body, ANYTHING GOES
As a Nurse Practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in the sexual health space, I've had countless conversations with adolescents and adult women about their bodies, sexual history, and contraceptive options. And my greatest frustration (and certainly theirs) is that the traditional insurance-based healthcare model doesn’t allow medical providers adequate time for such delicate conversations or quality sexual health education. All too often, patients come to me feeling more confused, frustrated, or having felt pressured to pursue options that don’t feel like the right fit.
As the mother and aunt of teenage boys, I've also observed how often young men are left out of the conversation. So I’m committed to raising, educating, and supporting a “society of mensches (a Yiddish word for good eggs who do the right thing)”.
The Bare Facts was born to to empower teens and young adults of all genders and identities, to make informed decisions about their sexual health through comprehensive education, open communication, and compassionate care.
Every. Human. Adult. Deserves to have safe and pleasurable sexual experiences, access to quality education and evidence-based sexual health resources, and freedom from coercion, discrimination, and violence. But the kind of education that ensures these things is not routinely built into the healthcare system, and it certainly doesn't happen by chance.
In fact, even as a recent report from The American Academy of Pediatrics encouraged providers to have one-to-one time with teens to provide accurate, comprehensive sex education, our traditional insurance-based healthcare model continues to dictate that providers see more patients in less time, leaving inadequate time for the sensitive conversations a robust sexual health education requires. That's not good enough. It's time for Seriously Straightforward Sexual Health Education, so we're taking the "cringe" out of the conversation!
